Welcome to go home

Hi, and welcome to the Devlog of "Walk home".

I will be talking a bit about the process of making the game, and also about what's to come.

The general game idea is based on a walk I took often when walking home from a friend's house, and the in-game structure and visuals are based on the location I lived.

Then I wanted to create a story, without any words being said, or any hand-holding by the game. so that has also been a complicated process.

I also had to figure out a way of entertaining the player while they walk without breaking the game immersion, so I decided to have the entertainment and story come through a phone.

I first began learning how to 3d model, using blender, I have 3d modeled before with maya, but I only made simple shapes and didn't even touch uv unwrapping or texturing. so I began a 30 day grind on learning blender, and making a render each day, where I slowly learned how to model and uv unwrap. and that's when I fell in love with using images as textures on low poly models, and decided that would be the art style for the game.

I then took photos of the entire area I lived in to gather as many textures as I could before I would move, as I knew I wanted to base the game's map on the street I was living in.

when I finally began making the game, I started making a prototype for the phone first. as it's the thing I was sure I would struggle the most with (i was correct) and after that, I began setting out the map's layout while modeling different objects. as more time went on, the more I realized that this game will forever be a good idea but maybe not a good game, as its hard to know and predict what players might do or think, and make a fun game without any humor, action or stuff like that...

I have plans on maybe making a devlog video on how I made the game, as it's been a fun process, and I've recorded some of the stuff I've done, alongside prototypes. other than that I plan to make more games, going back to my comfort zone of goofiness and jokes. and I think the next project I wanna do is vr actually.

Other than that I will patch this game up the moment I get feedback on stuff that needs to be fixed. But I won't make any promises, I'm very stubborn when it comes to my ideas and execution.

Tools used: Photoshop, Aseprite, Blender and Unreal Engine
